Busy Bees

I’ve been busy as a bee all week long. The focus? Still working toward getting a new library funded for our town, and I expect that effort to go on for quite a while. I have earned a few nicknames - some good, and some not so good. One of my best friends now calls me “Buzz Saw”, another calls me “Pit Bull”. They are saying it in a complimentary and teasing way, but I still think I prefer being called Mimi Pearl. I have learned that you have to be persistent and persuasive if you want to get things done, and I suppose I have earned the nicknames.
I just had to have a break this morning so I went to the backyard to sit in the shade for a while. Since I love to take pictures, I took the camera and tripod out with me. Of course, Squirt is always by my side - no, he is usually trotting in front of me. I may be the Pit Bull, but he is still the Alpha Dog. As he was busy making his rounds to be sure no animals were trespassing, I got my idea of what I wanted to try and photograph. One of my favorite blogs is www.thepioneerwoman.com and her photography contest this week was photos of insects. Well, I am not a candidate for her photography contests, but I heard a bumble bee and thought well maybe, just maybe, that thing would land on a flower and I could get a decent photo of it. I set the tripod up, mounted the camera, selected the setting I thought might be best and waited. Sure enough, that bee came buzzing along and started lighting on the flowers. I got a few shots - nothing spectacular.

Then Squirt showed up. I swear he nearly got us both stung. He spotted that bee having the very nerve to buzz around his flowers and he wasn't about to stand for it. I think you can read the look on his face. This photo was taken just before the jumping began.

If anyone has advice for getting rid of Japanese Beetles, I'd love to hear it. Those things are eating my crepe myrtles and knockout roses up. These are dead leaves that look like burned lace. Japanese Beetles. Everyone around here has been invaded.

I always look forward to the 3rd Saturday of each month when the Random Readers Book Club meets. I am a fairly new member, but felt like I had come into my own when I got asked to join. Eleanor will do the book review tomorrow. She has promised that her book is a weird one but she wouldn't tell me what it is. It is to be a surprise. I'll tell you about it tomorrow night and give it the thumbs up or thumbs down.
Have a great weekend!

I hear your pain about those beetles, I am at war! I like to use a plastic bottle cut in half, with the top half put upside down in the bottom half, with water and soap, and with the stick I knock the bugs in the bottle....very time consuming! But since their reflexes are to drop, it works well! The other way is trap with pheromones... but can be tricky as you will attrack them to your yard!
Good luck....time to save my raspberry bushes!

I turned my problem over to a professional. We have friends who use the traps and swear by them, which is probably what I should have done. We live in the country and they are coming here anyway. I admire you to have the perseverance to battle them by your method. I really am afraid of the pesticides the professionals use, but I'm sure I'm breathing all that stuff anyway, being totally surrounded with row crops.
Thanks for the tip. I may resort to it as I've heard mixed results on the spraying.
