On a Silver Platter
Anyone venture a guess what I’ll be up to my ears in next? Well, that garden is getting ready to “come in”. Yep, I’ll be canning tomatoes and it looks like we are about to enjoy a bumper crop. These are the first ones. They may look small to you, but I can tell you one thing about tomatoes grown in West Tennessee soil. They are sort of like strawberries grown around here. People from other parts of the country look at them and think they are small and puny looking, but they are the sweetest and best tasting things you’ll ever put in your mouth - sort of like Vidalia onions and Georgia peaches that only Georgia can boast about. When I think of strawberries, it is Humboldt, TN that comes to mind; and when I think of tomatoes, it is Ripley tomatoes. Well, I live near both places and I can grow tomatoes and strawberries with the best of ‘em.
If anyone has a great salsa recipe, please share. MH and I like the salsa that J. Alexander’s serves but can’t find a recipe for J. Alexander’s salsa anywhere on the internet. We are going to Memphis this afternoon as soon as the Random Readers Book Club is over. We plan to eat at J. Alexander’s this evening to see if we can figure it out. Wish us luck!

Well, they sure do look small...but from a NJ perspective they look great!! I am envious..ours are just setting flower...can't wait. Instead of salsa...do try the following recipe: [I eat it like salad] 2 cups chopped tomatoe; 1-2 cloves garlic minced/chopped; handful fresh basil leaves chopped; 1/4 cup EVOO [olive oil];2 Tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar [ not red wine]. Mix all together..salt/pepper if you need. On top of fresh baguette, toasted baguette top with a slice of fresh mozzarella cheese...lunch, dinner, snack, hmmmmmgood...can't wait till my garden grows...;-) Karin
We've been eating a few little SE TN tomatoes lately too. I'm still waiting for my first 'official' 2010 TN homegrown tomato sandwich though! Our first real sandwich size tomato usually fully ripens around July 4th. A friend of ours makes wonderful salsa. If I can find her recipe, I'll send it. She uses grape tomatoes and the combo of sweet tomato and spicy peppers is SOOO good!
Thank you both! Karin, your recipe may be on the table tomorrow evening. And Debbie, I'll be looking forward to the salsa recipe. It is usually July 4th before our tomato crop is in good, but we got these few small ones early this morning. I can't remember what variety MH planted, but they are very good.
